WHAT IS SURVIVAL CANNIBALISM AND CONSENT TO CANNIBALISM?

Survival cannibalism refers to the act of consuming human flesh in order to stay alive in life-threatening situations, such as being stranded without food or water or in a severe disaster. It often occurs in extreme conditions like plane crashes, shipwrecks, or other isolated scenarios where access to food in unavailable. The practice has historical and modern instances, such as the famous cases of the 1972 Andes plane crash and the Donner Party. Consent to cannibalism, however, revolves around the ethical and legal questions surrounding whether individuals in such situations can consent to being consumed. In some cases, survivors have decided to eat the deceased, sometimes with prior consent from the individual before their death or by agreement among the group. Consent can be difficult to determine in life-or-death scenarios, raising moral and legal dilemmas about bodily autonomy and the sanctity of life.
